Monthly Genre Assignments Students are assigned a monthly genre. This is to encourage students to read books, finish books, try different genres, present orally to a small group, and celebrate completing a book with a creative project. The project will be assigned at the beginning of the month, and due at the end of the same month (with the exception of November/December). A project will be assigned allowing time for students to do quality work. Projects are typically different with each genre. Below is our list of genres by month: OCTOBER = Fantasy or Science Fiction: FANTASY commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot element, theme, or setting. Usually this genre takes place in imaginary worlds where magic and magical creatures are common. SCIENCE FICTION is fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.   Technology Your 5th Grader will be using!  Two words to know: Synchronous = live instruction or lessons that happen at a set day and time. Asynchronous = recorded and/or assigned lessons that can flexibly fit into your child’s day. We will be using a variety of online platforms to deliver instruction and engage students asynchronously. For consistency, we have compiled a list of platforms we plan to use this year. Below please find a list of these platforms and links where they can be accessed. During the Soft Start we encourage students and families to visit these sites (bookmark them), take any tutorials offered, save passwords for easy access, or download their Apps if using an IPAD.  When students are logging on each day, it is important that they are always logging on using their personal PPS student account. If students are logged in using personal email or parent accounts, they will not be able to access platforms for which PPS has purchased licenses.  ...

  Setting your child up for success: As we prepare to embark on this new school year and distance learning, please help your child find a space in which they will be able to focus while they work.  Please help them organize their school materials so they are readily available during the school day. *If you have multiple children who will be distance learning, it may help for each child to use headphones with a microphone so they are better able to focus and participate in class/small group discussions. I know I k now! We are not at our school location, but I want you to know that breakfast cost is $1.50 f or students, or free for students who qualify for free/reduced lunches.  Lunch cost is $2.90 or free and milk is .50 cents .   Federal lunch applications are available online at www.pps.k12.or.us/departments/nutrition/index.htm (or may be picked up at the school office).  Remember: A new application must be completed every year. Money can be put in the student’s account and each day a meal is purchased, the student scans their card and the price is deducted from their account.   PPS Meal Distribution: Important Dates and Changes      We will resume meal distribution at 36 sites across the district on Wednesday, September 2. We will have a full list of sites and times available to families next week, once details are finalized.  The location closest to Maplewood is Markham School at 10531 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219.
