Technology Your 5th Grader will be using!

Technology Your 5th Grader will be using!

Two words to know:

Synchronous = live instruction or lessons that happen at a set day and time.

Asynchronous= recorded and/or assigned lessons that can flexibly fit into your child’s day.

We will be using a variety of online platforms to deliver instruction and engage students asynchronously. For consistency, we have compiled a list of platforms we plan to use this year. Below please find a list of these platforms and links where they can be accessed. During the Soft Start we encourage students and families to visit these sites (bookmark them), take any tutorials offered, save passwords for easy access, or download their Apps if using an IPAD.

When students are logging on each day, it is important that they are always logging on using their personal PPS student account. If students are logged in using personal email or parent accounts, they will not be able to access platforms for which PPS has purchased licenses.

Reminder: student emails are usually your child’s first initial, their last name and the last 4 digits of their student ID (which can be found in parentvue) followed by @student.pps.net

Example:    jsmith1111@student.pps.net

Their password is usually the month and day of your child’s birthday

Example:  0902      (for September 2)

Important tech features your child will be using to get in touch with me:

Zoom -     This is the platform we will use for our synchronous teaching (daily class meetings, live lessons, small group work)

Google Chat and Gmail - are tools your child will use to contact me when they have questions or need help.

We teachers use Chromebooks for instruction. While Mac’s are fine devices for online learning, I am not familiar with their operating system; so I will be limited in the troubleshooting support I can offer students.  In our video tutorials, where we show kids how to use new technology and apps, we will be modeling features using a Chromebook.

Below are links to various learning platforms and apps. If you click on anything that is BLUE, it is a hyperlink which will take you to the site.

Your child should be able to use their Google login for everything. If you have difficulties logging into anything, please contact your child’s teacher!

Please help your child bookmark these pages and practice logging in during the soft start dates (September 2-11).

The following sites should be accessed through PPS’ Clever Portal

SeeSaw - This is the main platform we will be using to assign and submit academic work. Students should check this site daily for the day’s schedule and all assignment postings. Parents can also access SeeSaw to monitor their child’s progress.

Dreambox - This site will be where students work asynchronously on math practice.

Sora - This is a digital library offering both ebooks and audiobooks. Sora is a user-friendly app that lets you access it through your laptop, phone or tablet.

Lexia Core5 this will be a site we use for asynchronous reading and vocabulary practice.

Sites we will use but are not available through PPS Clever Portal:

FlipGrid - This platform will be used occasionally when students are asked to record and upload videos.

Padlet - This platform will be used occasionally during live lessons as a place for students to share their thinking.

Newsela - This is a library of news articles written at various student levels. Your child could be assigned reading comprehension at their level (which means their article may look different than another child at a different reading level).

Other Online Book Resources

The Libby - Borrow and read ebooks and audiobooks from your local public library for free!

Tumble Book Library - This is an online library of books, some of which can be read aloud.
